Lei Lei was a founding member of the Stars Art Movement in the 1970s, the influential group of artists in China who fought for freedom of expression within the arts after the Cultural Revolution. He came to London in 1985, and has spent the past twenty years studying, creating new works, lecturing and exhibiting world wide. The Ashomolean Museum in Oxford gave him a one man show earlier this year - the first time a living artist has been honoured in this way.
'The son of a writer, Lei Lei is deeply versed in Chinese literature and poetry, and is a brush painter and calligrapher of exception skill and range. At the same time he is a fine draftsman, designer and colourist in the Western tradition. These two strands are woven together in all his work, and give it a unique richness and beauty.
Michael Sullivan, Oxford 2004
For the Start Collecting 1 exhibition (30th September - 7th October) Lei Lei will be showing some traditional Chinese landscapes, as well as examples of Chinese calligraphy and abstract collages.
